ReSAKSS-ECA is facilitated by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in partnership with the Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and other organizations in the region. ReSAKSS-ECA offers high-quality analyses and knowledge products to improve policymaking, track progress, document success, and derive lessons for the implementation of the CAADP agenda and other agricultural and rural development policies and programs in the region.
ReSAKSS-ECA has been established with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES
Like all other ReSAKSS nodes, the ReSAKSS-ECA programme is structured around three main thrusts:
Strategic analysis: targeted at monitoring and assessing sector performance, impact on poverty and food security, and future challenges and options for agricultural growth and investments in the region in order to achieve shared CAADP and MDG goals;
Knowledge management: development of a knowledge management, communications and information sharing platform for generating awareness of the importance of agriculture and promoting evidence- and outcomes-based policy and strategy planning;
Capacity strengthening: to promote greater demand and use of strategic analysis and knowledge management approaches that can successfully contribute to informing policy and decision making processes in the southern Africa.
Priority activities contribute to a common agenda of the ReSAKSS initiative to promote access to high quality information and knowledge on sector performance, monitoring, and future options of agricultural sector strategies in the region. Consultations with national and regional partners, and through a steering committee, help identify key relevant topics for analysis, capacity and information needs, as well as approaches for knowledge sharing and networking.
Activities are implemented through a collaborative network of individuals within national, regional and international policy research organizations, government technical agencies, regional data and information networks, local research institutions, universities, and NGOs.
The Steering Committee (SC) is chaired by the Director of Agriculture and Food Security of COMESA and meets once per year to review work plans, progress and advise on current and future priorities of the node, as well as identify opportunities for improving future impacts.
